Mariam, a 20-year-old living in Elafwayn, Somaliland, has experienced firsthand the struggles faced by many young women in her community. Education was often seen as a luxury rather than a necessity, and opportunities for personal and professional growth were limited. “I really appreciated the opportunities that Horn Humanitarian Action gave us,” she reflected, recalling her participation in the Gender Inclusion Project.

Mariam joined a cohort of young women who were selected for HHA’s initiatives, which included training in leadership, governance, and conflict resolution. The multi-faceted approach to capacity building empowered Mariam to see herself as a leader and changemaker within her community. “I learned that my voice matters and that I can make a difference, no matter how small it may seem,” she shared with enthusiasm.

As part of the project, Mariam was also involved in community awareness campaigns to address issues such as gender-based violence and the importance of education for girls. “I could see how our efforts resonated with families, and some even changed their views on sending their daughters to school,” Mariam recalled.

Mariam’s passion for advocacy has led her to become a role model for younger girls in Elafwayn. She frequently speaks at local gatherings, sharing her story and encouraging others to pursue their dreams. “Every young girl deserves an education and a chance to be heard. I am grateful to HHA for helping us find our voices,” she expressed.

Her journey exemplifies how HHA’s commitment to providing educational resources and empowerment to young women has ignited a wave of change in communities across Somaliland. Mariam continues to aspire to further her education, aiming to become a teacher and advocate for girls’ rights in the future.
