Aisha, a 23-year-old woman living in Hargeisa, faced numerous challenges while growing up in a community where gender norms often dictated the limitations placed on women. Despite her dreams of pursuing higher education and becoming a community leader, the constraints of her environment seemed insurmountable. “Without Horn Humanitarian Action, I would never have had the chance to embrace my potential,” she expressed with gratitude.
Aisha was selected to participate in HHA’s Gender Inclusion Project, which focuses on empowering women and promoting gender equality in Somaliland. Through comprehensive capacity-building workshops designed to enhance leadership skills and economic empowerment, Aisha had the opportunity to engage with other women who shared similar aspirations. “The workshops opened my eyes. I learned not only about my rights but also how to advocate for them,” she said passionately.
In addition to the workshops, Aisha received training in vocational skills that allowed her to start her own small business selling handmade crafts. Through this economic empowerment initiative, Aisha has developed a sense of financial independence that she never imagined possible. “Today, I can support myself and save money for my education, and I’m so proud of the woman I’ve become,” she noted.
Aisha has also taken on a leadership role within her community, advocating for women’s rights and encouraging others to participate in similar initiatives. “I want to inspire young girls to know that they can achieve anything when they believe in themselves,” Aisha added. Her remarkable transformation is a testament to the impact of HHA’s programs in fostering resilience and empowerment among women in Somaliland.
